The grizzly bear is any North American subspecies of brown bear and includes the infamous Kodiak bear. The word "grizzly" means "grizzled" and the Grizzly Bear is named for the grey tips of its hair. The Grizzly Bear is the largest bear in North America and can weigh up to 1,200 lbs and stand over 9.5 feet tall.
Grizzly bears hibernate for 5–7 months each year. Only about 1,500 grizzlies are left in the lower 48 states of the US.
